Penis Powell acted for the radio having Jeff Chandler and you may was pleased because of the younger star. Chandler later on appreciated, “It absolutely was Knob which took me to Columbia and you may told folks who does pay attention, ‘This kid should really be in photo.’ One to executive eventually kinda provided your a peek and this said: ‘All right you , we’re going to set him within the your very own.’ Which will be how i found play a casino player when you look at the a credit to try out sequence.” [ six ]
Critical lobby
Kine Each week told you “The fresh powerful ‘crooks fall out’ is actually peopled having a colorful variety out-of crucial and arresting emails, and they, skilfully controlled by creator and you will manager, allow the movie so you’re able to tread drinking water effectively. It is just into the end this actually starts to falter, but the slap-right up finale rescues it on ‘red’. Excellently staged and smartly dialogued, it has no higher difficulties for the traditions down their incredibly ugly term.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Flick Bulletin said “The movie actions at the a quick speed, brand new discussion is actually smooth and characterisations essentially productive. Manhood Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes lead the latest cast professionally, once the investigator is actually played with considerable aplomb because of the that person personality, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody regarding The brand new Yorker listed “Which terse and you may tight movie noir was based on the brand new personal and professional conflicts of your own name character, the brand new violent mastermind (starred from the Manhood Powell) trailing a smart illegal casino. The latest film’s author and you can movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a great multidimensional chess online game, getting mortal stakes, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s partner (Ellen Drew), a beneficial cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a great scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever brother (Nina Foch) worked on casino and you will dated a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures of like and menace, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly assertive photo (in addition to his governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious but really outlined spectacle an invisible antique of your genre.” [ ten ]
Assortment gave the movie kudos, composing, “This can be a sensible whodunit, that have awareness of scripting, casting and you may camerawork training they over the average. Photo have action and you can anticipation, and you may particular quick meets out of humor to add style. Ace activities from the Cock Powell, given that a gaming family overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, as an authorities inspector, plus within the rating . Even though the spot pursue a common pattern, the latest characterizations try fresh and activities adequate so you can overbalance. Dialog try terse and you may relevant, steering clear of the emotional, phoney contact. Strange cam bases appear occasionally to help you heighten desire and you will momentarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling just like the director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, new journalist and you can affiliate manufacturer, in addition to aids in rendering it a soft development.” [ 11 ]
Motion picture critic Bosley Crowther offered the film a blended feedback, criticizing it having sluggish tempo, writing, “Nevertheless the slowness and you can general frustration of area for 2-thirds of flick will not lead to well known excitement, therefore the shallowness of the puzzle regarding who’s got carrying out all the the fresh killing alleviates they of every higher anticipation. It is generally a question of watching Mr. Powell go through his paces smartly if you’re a giant shed away from actors and you can stars render your standard support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good little woman which brings out the brand new finest in him and you can Ellen Received is the easy and you can slinky vixen just who becomes him on jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily because villain and you may Lee J. Cobb does a special ready tour once the a weary cops inspector which ultimately closes the case. A lot of drinking and you will puffing is done because of the all of the concerned.” [ 12 ]
Philp French, creating regarding the Observer told you: “That it hardly shown movie noir is the chill, controlled directorial introduction of kept-wing author who continued while making including classics once the The the fresh new King’s Guys as well as the Hustler .” [ thirteen ]
